The image displays the Immaculate Conception Cathedral, also known as the Xuanwumen Catholic Church, located in Xicheng District, Beijing, China, under a clear blue sky on a sunny day
Short TermThe image displays the Immaculate Conception Cathedral, also known as the Xuanwumen Catholic Church, located in Xicheng District, Beijing, China, under a clear blue sky on a sunny day. The church is a prominent Gothic Revival structure, characterized by its symmetrical facade constructed primarily of grey brick or stone with extensive white decorative tracery and trim. The main facade features a central section flanked by two taller bell towers. Each tower terminates in multiple pointed pinnacles, and the central gable of the facade is topped by a golden statue of a robed figure with raised arms, while the smaller gables of the side towers also feature golden statues, one of which appears to hold a sword or cross. The towers incorporate multiple tiers of pointed arched windows, fitted with reddish-brown louvers or shutters. The central section of the facade above the main entrance features a large circular rose window with intricate tracery. Below this, three prominent pointed arched doorways with bright red double doors serve as the main entrances. Decorative niches containing statues are integrated into the facade's architectural elements. A triangular pediment above the rose window contains a relief sculpture and a symbol, possibly an IHS monogram. In the foreground, a wide, multi-tiered grey stone staircase leads up to a large, checkered-patterned plaza directly in front of the church. Ornate white stone balustrades, featuring intricate carvings including swirls and geometric patterns, flank the staircase and extend along the edge of the plaza. Two traditional Chinese guardian lion statues, sculpted from white stone, are positioned on the balustrade pillars, each adorned with a wreath of green foliage and white flowers. A small yellow sign with Chinese characters, possibly "小心台阶" (Mind the steps), is visible on one of the steps. To the left and right sides of the church, parts of buildings with traditional Chinese orange-tiled, curved roofs are visible, contrasting with the Western architectural style of the cathedral. Lush green trees are also visible in the background and to the sides. Several individuals are present in the scene. One person wearing a dark jacket and a red hat is standing near the rightmost red door of the church, facing away from the viewer. On the far left, near the traditional Chinese structure, a person in a pink top and white pants walks away from the church, and other indistinct figures are visible further in the background.
