This image shows a dark, dramatic sculpture of an angel against a cloudy sky. The angel appears to be in mid-flight or pose, with one wing outstretched and the other partially visible. Its drapery flows, and its arms are extended, possibly reaching out. The sculpture is positioned on a rocky, textured base, which is itself on a taller, darker rectangular pedestal. The overall impression is one of movement and intensity, amplified by the dark, swirling clouds and the silhouetted form of the angel. The image is taken from a low angle, looking up at the sculpture. The sculpture is located in the city of Sortavala, Russia, and is known as the "Angel of Sortavala" or the "Monument to the Soldiers of the Winter War." It is a memorial to the Soviet soldiers who fought in the Winter War (1939-1940). The sculpture was created by artist Sergei Osipov and erected in 2012.
