Short TermAlexander Column, a monument located in Palace Square, Saint Petersburg, Russia. The monument is a tall, slender column made of red granite, topped with a bronze statue of an angel. The angel holds a cross in its right hand and its left hand rests on its hip. The column itself is 47.5 meters (156 feet) high and weighs 600 tons. It was erected in honor of Emperor Alexander I and his victory over Napoleon's invading army in 1812. The sky in the background is overcast and a pale blue.
