The angel holds a cross in its right hand and its left hand rests on its hip. The column itself is 47.5 meters (156 feet) high and weighs 600 tons. It was erected in honor of Emperor Alexander I and his victory over Napoleon's invading army in 1812. The sky in the background is overcast and a pale blue.
